The recently released annual report ‘Trends and Uses in Today’s Global Economy,’ holds key insights on where the background screening industry currently stands, and the direction it is headed.

The most important takeaway from the PBSA report is that background screening is both prevalent and growing. According to the research, 94% of organizations use some level of screening process when hiring a new candidate. The top three reasons are:

  1. Protection. Companies want to protect the safety of their employees and customers

  2. Quality Control. Companies want to improve the quality of their hires

  3. Laws. Some industry regulations mandate the use of background screenings

Additionally, the practice of screening individuals continues to grow. From 2019 to 2020, the screening of full-time employees jumped from 86% to 90%; this pattern of growth is seen year over year, demonstrating the steady increase in background screening needs.

However, there still remain significant issues that the current background screening process must address. According to the PBSA report, challenges with checks, costs and the lengthy wait time for results are hurdles companies regularly face when conducting screenings, and directly impact finding and onboarding the best talent.
